The GoPro Hero3 plus Black is a successor to the highly successful GoPro Hero 3. The new and improved GoPro Hero3+ Black Edition is an impressive upgrade over its already quite formidable predecessor in more ways than one.
Design and appearance.
The Hero 3+ looks remarkably identical to the Hero 3, the main difference being that it is 20% smaller and lighter making it easier to mount, more wearable and versatile. It comes with a waterproof housing that makes it submergible up to 40m deep. Also the new case comes with bigger buttons that are easier to press.
Video and photo quality
This camera can shoot high quality videos in a variety of modes and frame rates. Video modes range from as low as WMVA to 1440p and even 4K that allows for extra high res video capture. Other modes include 720p, 960p, 1080p and 2.7k.With WMVA one can shoot video at up to 240 fps. The maximum frame rate for 720p video is 120fps, 100fps for 960p, 60fps for 1080p, 48 fps for 1440p, 30 for 2.7k and 15fps for 4k.
As for still images, the Black Edition allows for 5MP, 7MP and 12 MP modes. The 12MP mode is capable of 30fps shooting which enhances fast action sequences. Time Lapse Mode comes with options of 0.5, 1, 2, 5, 10, 30 and 60 sec intervals. At full resolution, you can shoot continuous photos at 3fps, 5fps and 10 fps by pressing and holding the shutter button. It is also possible to record video and capture stills simultaneously but only with 720p, 1080p and 1440p, and with no high speed image capture modes.
The Black Edition comes with an improved six element aspherical lens with a f/2.8 aperture. GoPro promise a 33% improvement in image sharpness over the Hero3.
GoPro App and Wi-Fi
The GoPro app enables remote connection with smartphones and tablets using Wi-Fi for play back and review of content shot on the Hero3+ Black Edition. Compared to the Hero 3 Black, the later version offers 4 times faster Wi-Fi enabling faster photo and video sharing and also enhancing connectivity to the Wi-Fi remote that allows you to control up to 50 cameras at a distance of 180m.
It comes with a 1180mAH, 3.7 volts, 4366mWh rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The Hero 3+ Black can record video at 1080p and 60 fps for up to 1 hour with Wi-Fi on and GoPro App running. With Wi-Fi switched off, it can record up to 2 hours of 1080p video recording at 30 fps representing a 30% improvement over its predecessor.
The items included in the box are the camera itself, Wi-Fi remote, Quick Release Buckle, USB charger, Vertical Quick Release Buckle, 3 way Pivot Arm, 2 Adhesive Mounts; one curved and one flat. Some other interesting accessories that are not included in the box can be obtained at an extra cost.
These include various mounts such as the helmet mount, tripod mount and roll bar mount among many others that allow for all angles of shooting with exemplary comfort. Other accessories include an extra rechargeable battery and a frame.
– Auto Light Mode – this feature automatically adjusts the frame rate depending on lighting conditions to enhance performance in low-light.
– SuperView – this takes a broader view in TV-friendly 16:9 aspect ratio as opposed to 4:3. This allows you to capture more of yourself and your surroundings without causing fish eye distortion.
The GoPro 3+ Black Edition is quite a step up from the GoPro 3 Black which is itself quite a remarkable device. GoPro have established themselves as the leading camera makers and certainly the Black Edition is in keeping with that reputation.
